My name is Mark Gregory, and my photography career began over fifty years ago. My dad was a professional photographer, and I was his oldest son. At fourteen I became his assistant and understudy.
My dad made his living photographing weddings and social events. I was his unenthusiastic assistant – carrying cases, holding lights, and running for rolls of film. At sixteen I photographed my first wedding and continued assisting and photographing throughout high school and college. It was work, a job, something I had to do.
While still a teenager my dad took me to my first photography seminar, actually a convention for the state photographers association. It was there that I saw stunning portraits of brides and families and was exposed (no pun intended) to the teaching of some incredibly talented photographic artists. I sat in awe as they demonstrated the nuances of composition, of properly posing and lighting subjects to render beautiful portraits of their subjects. From that time forward being a photographer was not something I had to do but rather something I wanted to be.
Along with wedding photography – which I no longer do – I was a partner in a successful school photography business. I then transitioned into commercial photography. I’m quite comfortable doing many things photographic, but creating portraits is my chosen specialty.
Portraiture is the most enjoyable and satisfying area of photography that I know of. I work with friendly, nice people from all walks of life. While each client is unique, they share a common interest. They want to own and display portraits that make them, their colleagues or family members look their very best. The value they place on their portraits affords me the opportunity to do my very best work with every portrait I make.
